At the end of a difficult year like 2020, auto industry sales figures certainly can’t be positive, taken in their entirety: the industry has heavily left behind what was good achieved in 2019, with losses on the following year approaching 20%. A good fourth quarter was seen, for certain models belonging to those more desirable market niches, such as SUV vehicles, which constitutes a large segment. Suffice it to say that the 25 most popular models in this segment have in fact managed to contain the drop in sales to 12.7% over the previous year. So here are the best-selling SUVs in America in 2020, according to the numbers released in the automakers’ sales reports.

  1. Toyota RAV4

2020 Sales: 430,387 (vs 2019: -3.9%)

For the fourth consecutive year, Toyota RAV4 is confirmed as the most successful SUV in America. In the first quarter of 2020, sales had even recorded +16.5% over the same period in 2019, then closed out the dreadful 2020 with a very precious – 3.9%. Completely revised 2019 looks, better performance, improved capability, and new state-of-the-art standard safety equipment (automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning). Another arrow in Toyota’s bow, hybrid engines: the new plug-in is efficient while delivering performance second only to the Japanese manufacturer’s GR Supra sports car.

Honda CR-V

2020 Sales: 333,502 (vs 2019: -13.2%)

Touched a sales record in 2019, Honda’s SUV kept up the pace through March 2020; with more than 4 million sold since 1997, the Honda CR-V remains the Japanese automaker’s most successful model in the States. With the 2020 model year, Honda has redone the make-up and introduced the hybrid engine, a 2-motor powertrain that combines two electric motors with a 2.0-liter heat engine for a combined 212 horsepower.

Chevrolet Equinox
2020 Sales: 270,994 (vs 2019: -21,7%)

The Equinox, Chevrolet’s best-selling SUV, as of the first quarter of 2020, was ranked second in overall sales behind the Toyota RAV42021; the restyling was expected in late 2020, but the launch has been delayed until this year: There will be new features such as projector headlights, LED running lights, wider horizontal taillights and LED taillights for upper trim levels. Inside, improved outward visibility thanks to a new lower windshield base.
